How do you provide students with choice in the classroom? How does their voice shine so that they are empowered to own their learning? Students come into our classrooms with a variety of needs, passions, and personalities. Helping them to own their education means providing them with different ways to show what they have learned. Teachers don't have to use tests for all formative assessments. Providing a variety of ways to demonstrate learning can empower students and connect their talents/interests in a way that allows them to shine. But providing choice and an opportunity for their voice can be difficult in the fast pace world of teaching. Learn easy ways, both high tech and low tech, to incorporate choice in the classroom. Learn how important student voice is and how that can help motivate students to excel. We will also discuss common problems and concerns that inhibit choice in the classroom and ways we can overcome it.
